MELT

VISUAL LANGUAGE

Oscar-qualifying cinematographer Sophie Gemelas is exploring different facets of isolation in the cinematography of Melt. In the first half of the short, the goal is ultra-wide shots, high-contrast lighting, and expansive swaths of negative space. Isolation in the rehearsal scene is experienced through excessive performance. Everyone is competing to have the last word or say the cleverest thing and no one is connecting despite there being seven people in the room.

(Chicago, 2002)

The rehearsal scene is cold and cavernous visually, reflecting emotional projection and a lack of substance.

(Ballerina, 2023)

The second part, however, is isolating through cozy claustrophobic genuineness. Sophie will use wide lenses despite majority medium and closeup frame sizes.

(Baby Reindeer, 2024)

(Birdman, 2014)

The idea is to create an uncomfortable level of unflinching closeness and honesty. The isolation in the second half is felt through excessive intimacy rather than a lack of it.

The parts have to complement each other instead of feeling entirely separate.
